The Side Of Me
1)Introducing Me
I am Khairunnisa bt Azmar and I am 23 years old. I am from Penang and I was born on 14th of October 1988. I am the eldest in my family and I have one sister and two brothers. All of them are now studying at the universities. My parents are in the education line but I don't know whether I will follow their footsteps by joining the education line. I really love to listen to oldies songs for example songs from The Bangles, The Carpenters, Shakin Stevens, Air Supply , Savage Garden and many more. I am not very good at technology gadgets although I know that nowadays people rely very much on technology. I think that is all about me.
2) How would you rate yourself in terms of your computer skills? and why?
I think I am savvy in terms of computer skills. I am not very expert in using all the computer software and I am not a computer addict. I just use the computer especially my laptop for doing the assignments and search the internet. There are only two software that I think I am very familiar with which are the microsoft word and power point. The other softwares in the computer are not very familiar to me. I rarely surf the internet for other purposes than education. I only surf the internet for my assignments, to read the online news, watch movies and downloading songs. Thus I regard myself as a computer savvy.
3) What computer software and hardware knowledge do you have?
Like I said before I am a computer savvy and I do not have much knowledge about computer and technology. For software I am familiar and can say quite novice with microsoft word and power point. The rest of the softwares in the computer I am not very familiar with as I do not use it frequently as I do for word and power point. I know about the existing of other softwares in the computer but I do not use it. As for the hardwares I am totally out. I do not know much about hardwares.
4) Have you experienced learning via computer (online/ etc)?
Yes. I learn through the computer I always surf the internet for education purposes. When I have problems in learning or I want to know more about something, I will just google it on the net and it makes my life easier. All the information is at the fingertips. I admit that learning using the computer and internet is very easy as everything is at the fingertips and you can know a lot of other things around the world. I find it easier to learn via online as I can search as much information that I need in my study. Sometimes, I do not have time to buy the newspaper, therefore I will surf the internet and reading the online news. I always surf the Utusan Online for news as I find it convenient for me.
5) Did you try to incorporate technology in some of your lessons during your practicum? Was it a success or a failure?
During my practicum at SMK USJ4, I did use the technology in my lessons. I try to incorporate the lesson with technology and it was a success. My students really enjoyed learning through technology as they found it interesting and different from the regular chalk - and - talk method. Usually for grammar classes, I will use the technology as I will play the song and they have to listen to the grammar and fill in the blanks. It was a success and meaningful learning for the students. It is because when I asked them on the next class, they still can remember what they have learned in the previous class. Sometimes, I prepared power point slides presentation for the students especially for literature classes. It is because the students are learning poems, short stories and also novels. I find it easier to explain to them using the power point slides rather than writing the notes on mahjong paper and pasted it on the board. The power point slides are much more convenient and saves a lot of time.
6) What is your opinion on the use of computer / technology in language teaching?
It depends on the person on how they use the technology in language teaching. Some people find it easy to use the technology while some people find it hard to use the technology. Although we all believe that technology saves a lot of human's problems and we rely very much so on the technology but somehow I believe that the best language teaching method is through face to face (I shall say the old method). I find it much more genuine in language teaching rather than using the technology. It depends on what course that you use to teach using the technology. Some of the courses are very much rely on the technology while some other courses it relies very much on the presentation of the presenter rather than learning via online. Well that is only my humble opinion.
7) What are your expectations from this course?
My expectation is to learn more about computer as I am not a very novice or expert in using computer. I want to know more about computer as well as technology. I hope that by learning in this course I can improve my computer skills and at the same time see the relevant of using computer and technology in language teaching. Last but not least, I really hope to score an A for this course & I will try my best in order to achieve that :)
